Nathan Adelson Hospice to Restart In-Person Bereavement Sessions

For more than a year, Nathan Adelson Hospice has hosted on-line only, virtual bereavement group sessions. But things are about to return to normal in Nye County. Nathan Adelson Hospice chaplain and bereavement facilitator Richard Martin says people will once again be able to meet in-person to talk about their grief. Preventing COVID-19 Variants

Governor Steve Sisolak has announced efforts to re-double vaccination efforts to curtail the spread of the Covid 19 Delta Variant spreads. You can also receive a Covid vaccine at many of the local pharmacies. There will also be a Back to School Fair in Pahrump on July 31st, covid vaccines as well as all childhood vaccinations will be available there. The Back to School Fair will take place in Beatty on July 23rd and in Amargosa on July 24th.

Health: New Therapy Brings Hope to Man Fighting Alzheimer's Disease

June is Alzheimer's Awareness Month. And today, we bring you one man's story of hope. After participating in clinical trials for a new Alzheimer's drug, which recently received FDA approval, he feels he's benefited from the therapy. Erica Foreman has more. The new drug is the first shown to slow progression of Alzheimer's Disease. It should be available to patients in the the coming weeks. However, it's expected to be expensive, and, for the time being, won't be covered by insurance.

District Attorney Charis Arabia Gives an Update on Fatal Crash

An almost head on collision on March 27 on Highway 95 took the life of 3 people. Michael Durmeier, Lauren Starcevich and Durmeier's 12 year old daughter Georgia were killed in the crash. They were all from Victor, Idaho and along with Lauren's two other children were on a spring break trip. Now Tyler Kennedy is facing five counts of reckless driving causing substantial death or injury and possibly DUI. District Attorney Chris Arabia spoke to News 25 about the case. There have been two GoFundMe Accounts set up for the families. One is for Michael and Georgia Durmeier's final arrangements and you can find that on GoFundMe by searching 'Bring Hope to the Durmeier's' and the other fund is set up for Lauren's daughter Emmerson and you can find that by searching 'Emerson's Emergency Fund'. Kennedy was also recently in Pahrump justice court and is also facing additional charges for voluntary sexual conduct with a prisoner.

The Board of County Commissioners recently looked into amending the Nye County Code in an effort to protect renters from discrimination because of the COVID-19 Pandemic. There was a lot of discussion on this topic among the Commissioners. In the end, the Board decided that Commissioner Blundo would work with the County Manager to draft an amended code. The comments of the commissioners would be taken into consideration when drafting the proposed change and it would be brought back before the board for further discussion.

Health: New Dad Celebrates First Father's Day After Overcoming Male Infertility

Many of us spent Sunday celebrating Father's Day. And it was especially sweet for one new dad -- who feared he'd never father a child due to male infertility. Erica Foreman has more on how he beat the odds for his baby boy. The CDC estimates about nine percent of men in the United States are infertile. Doctor Parekh adds that infertility, in general, is rising globally. He encourages couples to talk to their doctors, or seek out a specialist, if they're struggling to conceive.

 

 

Commissioners Investigating New Voting Machines

At the June 2nd Board of County Commissioners meeting, Commissioners debated the possible removal of the Dominion voting system in Nye County. Commissioner Blundo proposed the removal and replacement of the machines and County Clerk Sam Merlino asked that several points be considered before a decision is made. The Commissioners voted 5 to 0 to have staff investigate other voting systems and the costs associated with them. The vote was not to approve the purchase of a new system at this time.

Man who killed 5 Cyclists has been sentenced

On Thursday, December 10th a group of 40 cyclists set out on a 130 mile ride. It was an annual tradition that would take them from the M Resort Spa and Casino in Henderson through Searchlight to Nipton California and back. Some of the riders were on a retirement ride, celebrating one on their group. Then tragedy struck. You can see the Ghost Bike Memorial in Downtown Summerlin in front of Public School 702 in the shopping district and there are plans to move the memorial around the valley as well.

Cleveland Clinic Health Report

June is Scoliosis Awareness Month. Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine, and it affects about seven million people in the US. Most cases are mild and treated with bracing, while others require surgery that limits flexibility. Today, we meet a young ballerina whose dream to dance was threatened by a severe case of scoliosis. Erica Foreman has more on the novel surgery that has her back ‘en pointe.’ Aubrey is already a professional level ballerina and plans to pursue a career in the performing arts. Doctor Goodwin says currently only a small subset of scoliosis patients are candidates for tethering, although it’s a relatively new procedure and that may evolve.

 

 

Boy found in Mountain Springs has been identified

7 year old Liam Husted from San Jose, California. That is the confirmed identity of the boy found murdered Mountain Springs ten days ago. His mother is wanted by police, her name is Samantha Moreno Rodriquez. She was last seen driving a 2007 dark blue Dodge Caliber. Lt. Ray Spencer from the Las Vegas Metro Police Department spoke this afternoon about the case. Once again the mom’s name is Samantha Moreno Rodriquez. Police are looking for her. She was last seen driving a 2007 dark blue Dodge Caliber with a California License plate of 6WLH211. The Pahrump Music Festival

Organizers of the Pahrump Music Festival say the inaugural event was a huge success. The three-day festival featured a number of musical acts, food, fun and a carnival. Doug Dubin says he received lots of great feedback from vendors, performers and those in attendance – and tells News 25 they have even bigger plans for next year. VFW Retires More Than 1,000 Flags During Semi-Annual Ceremony

In addition to Sunday’s Memorial Day ceremony, Pahrump VFW Post 10054, with some help from local boy and girl scouts, retired more than a thousand US flags and banners this past weekend. If you have a flag that needs to be retired, you can drop it off at the VFW Post, located on Homestead Road in Pahrump. VFW Post 10054 retires flags twice a year – on Memorial Day Weekend and on September 11.

 

 

Smoke From Trash Truck Fire Seen For Miles

Pahrump Valley Fire and Rescue responded to a report of a trash truck on fire this afternoon. Crews responded quickly and the driver declined any treatment.

 

 

Marine Corp League Holds Memorial Day Ceremony

Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official holiday in 1971. Nye County Sheriff's Office Requests Budget Increase

The Sheriff's Department appeared before the Board of County Commissioners on May 3rd to present their 2021-2022 budgetary request. Sheriff Sharon Wehrly and Captain David Boruchowitz spoke about the need to fill administrative positions that have been lost in the past, state and federal mandated needs and the $400,000.00 overtime budget. Captain Boruchowitz said that the two positions would help the department with their reporting requirements to remain compliant for grants received as well as future grants and mandated needs. He also said that even if fully staffed, it isn't feasible for the law enforcement business to not have to pay overtime.

 

 

Pahrump Valley Fire and Rescue Presents Budget Proposal

Budgets for the Fiscal Year 2021-2022 were recently presented to the Board of County Commissioners. Each department director presented their wants and needs to the board with an opportunity to answer questions from the Commissioners.
