Health: How Healthy Eating Patterns Can Benefit Children Who Are Obese

A recent study from Cleveland Clinic Children's shows the benefits of three different types of diets for children who are obese. According to the CDC, one in five children and adolescents in the United States has obesity. Doctor Michael Macknin led the study and explains the research.

State Fire Marshal Investigating Deadly Pahrump Fire

The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating a structure fire that claimed the life of a Pahrump woman. Neighbors called 911 to report the fire, which started in the early evening hours last Wednesday at a home on Blanchard Road. Pahrump Valley Fire Chief Scott Lewis says the home was already fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

 

 

Pahrump: Fire Destroys Home on Meier Drive, Woman Escapes Safely

Pahrump Valley Fire and Rescue was busy with yet another fire late Sunday night. This one destroyed a manufactured home on Meier Drive. Chief Scott Lewis says a woman living there was able to escape and is now receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.

 

 

Fire Chief: Take Precautions to Avoid a House Fire

There's been a string of structure fires in Pahrump in just the last few weeks. Four people have died in those fires. Chief Lewis says it's important to take precautions to insure you and your family is prepared if disaster strikes.

Man Allegedly Torches His Own Home, Investigation Underway

A man shows up at a Pahrump convenience store, saying he poured gasoline on his house and lit it on fire. Now, authorities are looking into those claims, after Pahrump Valley Fire and Rescue was called out to extinguish a fire on Cheyenne Way. News 25 spoke with Fire Chief Scott Lewis at the scene. The man who claims to have started the fire was transported to Desert View Hospital for treatment of burn injuries.

First Responders Deliver Thanksgiving Meals to Pahrump Seniors

Pahrump Valley Fire and Rescue and Nye County Emergency Management mobilized its forces Wednesday morning -- to deliver Thanksgiving meals to local seniors. News 25 was on hand at the Pahrump Senior Center, where the meals were being prepared and loaded onto fire vehicles for delivery. The Pahrump Senior Center also served in-person Thanksgiving meals during the lunch hour today. The center is now closed until Monday, when they'll resume normal operations, including daily lunches for seniors, served from 11:30 to 12:30. State Fire Marshal Investigating Deadly Pahrump Fire

An investigator with the Nevada State Fire Marshal's Office is in Pahrump, trying to determine what sparked a deadly fire. One woman died Sunday night, when she was unable to escape from a travel trailer parked at a residence on Belville Road. Pahrump Valley Fire Chief Scott Lewis says she was living there temporarily with her husband and dog. The trailer was parked just feet away from a house. Flames spread to that structure, but Chief Lewis says damage was limited to the exterior. No one was inside that home at the time of the fire.

 

 

Pahrump VFW Post Poker Run Benefits Toys For Tots Program

The Veterans Of Foreign Wars Post 10054 Rider’s Group hosted a Poker Run this past Saturday, November 20th to collect donations for The United States Marine Corp’s Toys For Tots program. It’s the second such Poker Run the group has hosted since last year to bring smiles to Pahrump children of all ages. For one veteran familiar to the residents of Pahrump, it means just a little bit more. Here’s Peter Christian to tell us more.

Arrest Made For Malicious Prosecution Against Nye County DA

The Nye County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Las Vegas woman for attempting to have District Attorney Chris Arabia prosecuted. The woman identified as Kris Dane falsely stated, according the sheriff’s office, that the DA was attempting to have her sign a statement against Attorney Ronni Boskovich when she was terminated from her job at the DA’s office in 2018. Boskovich is currently running against DA Chris Arabia for the District Attorney’s seat here Nye County. The pair has been named as subjects in a few legal matters in the recent past. It’s unclear what the relationship that the suspect Kris Dane has to either the district attorney or to Ms Boskovich.

 

 

Pahrump: Hit-And-Run Crash Sends Pedestrian to Hospital

One person is transported to Desert View Hospital after being struck by a vehicle on Pahrump’s south side. The vehicle involved fled the scene. If you have any information about this crash, you're asked to contact the Nye County Sheriff's Office.

A weekend fire has claimed the life of a Pahrump woman. Pahrump Valley Fire and Rescue arrived on scene on Mary Lou Street to find the residence engulfed in flames. Fire Chief Scott Lewis says firefighters were able to pull the elderly woman from the home, but she did not survive her injuries.

 

 

Car, Motorcycle Collide at Pahrump Intersection, Site of Similar Crash Two Weeks Ago

Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle crash in Pahrump that sent a motorcycle rider to the hospital. That rider was detained immediately after the crash by a Nye County deputy, after allegedly attempting to flee the scene. Pahrump Valley Fire Chief Scott Lewis talks about his department's response. Authorities suspect impairment may have played a role in the crash. No one inside the car claimed any injuries at the scene. Two motorcycle riders were seriously hurt in another crash at this same intersection just two weeks ago.

An educator who recognized a need in her community is helping change outcomes for her inner-city students. Under her leadership, young black girls are finding their footing following pandemic closures and in a sometimes confusing and controversial world. Kim Martinez reports.

 

 

Pahrump Nevada Genealogy Society Helping People Discover Their Roots

A local organization is helping people discover their roots. The Pahrump Nevada Genealogical Society held a genealogical fair at the Pahrump Valley Museum this past weekend. Paula Elefante says the goal is to help people discover their ancestors and explore their family tree. The Pahrump Nevada Genealogical Society has been in existence for 26 years. If you're interested in becoming a member, simply show up for one of their monthly meetings. They're on the third Wednesday of each month, at 2:00pm at the Pahrump Valley Museum. And we want to let you know, they will not be meeting in December.

Darth Maul Actor Ray Park Meets, Greets Fans At Pahrump's Hypno Comics

The actor who played a well-known Star Wars character was in Pahrump Saturday. Ray Park, who appeared on-screen as Darth Maul, met with fans, signed autographs and took photos at Hypno Comics and Games. Owner George Chase says so many people showed up, Ray agreed to stick around a bit longer than planned.

 

 

Apple Festival Draws Large Crowd, Generates Money For Conservation Efforts

Thunderbird Conservation Farm in Pahrump is celebrating all things apple. The farm invited everyone to visit Saturday, for the first annual Apple Festival. And Mindi Mulcahey says it was the perfect day for families to have some fun. Proceeds from the Apple Festival will help fund the farm's conservation efforts.

 

 

Health: Updated Guidelines Lower Diabetes Screening Age to 35

November is Diabetes Awareness Month. According to the CDC, more than 34 million people have diabetes. And there are new recommendations for screening. The US Preventive Services Task Force recently lowered the age to begin screening for diabetes to 35 for those who have obesity or are overweight.

Firehouse Fling and Flea Market To Benefit Southern Inyo Fire Protection District

The Southern Inyo Fire Protection District is gearing up for its biggest fundraiser of the year. The Firehouse Fling and flea market is this Saturday, November 6 at Tecopa Hot Springs Resort. Robin Flinchum says the event is a major source of funding for the local fire department. Again, the Firehouse Fling is this Saturday, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at Tecopa Hot Springs Resort. And during this year's 25th Anniversary Gala, held at The Four Seasons Las Vegas, the class of 2021 Hall of Fame Inductees were recognized. Pahrump Valley Fire and Rescue responded to a call for a fireworks fire Monday evening at the fireworks launch site in Pahrump. Chief Scott Lewis explains what firefighters discovered when they arrived on Fox Avenue. Lewis reminds everyone that the Pahrump fireworks shoot site is only available for use with a permit. The CDC estimates about nine percent of men in the United States are infertile. Doctor Parekh adds that infertility, in general, is rising globally. He encourages couples to talk to their doctors, or seek out a specialist, if they're struggling to conceive.
