The Nye County Sheriff's Office will once again be in the spotlight. A new streaming channel -- called the American Sheriff Network -- will feature the work of our local law enforcement officers. Sheriff Sharon Wehrly says the project is the brainchild of a colleague from Arizona. The American Sheriff Network is a subscription service. So there is a monthly fee to watch the shows. LVMPD Investigating Homicide of Boy, Found in Mountain Springs

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the homicide of a young boy, whose body was discovered Friday morning in Mountain Springs. Lieutenant Ray Spencer says they hope someone out there knows something that can help them identify the victim. Lieutenant Spencer says it appears the boy's body had been left at the scene within the last 24 hours.

Seniors Recognized, Honored at Pahrump Valley High School

Dozens of Pahrump Valley High School Students were recognized during a senior award ceremony Wednesday evening. The Class of 2021 valedictorian and salutatorian were also announced. Senior Kathryn Daffer is graduating with a GPA of 5.3, earning her the honor of salutatorian. The Class of 2021 valedictorian, graduating with a GPA of 5.425, is Makayla Gent.

 

 

Education News: Students Start Early on Path to College

For students who will be the first in their families to attend college, knowing what it takes to get there is often a mystery. But thanks to a program called Junior Rise, middle schoolers are being exposed to everything from the application process to resume writing and the importance of community service. Kim Martinez reports. Since its inception more than a decade ago, Junior Rise Scholars has helped nearly 500 students with their dreams of going to college. Almost all have been first generation college students.

Former DMV Office Will Soon Become Gun Shop and Indoor Shooting Range

Work is underway to convert the old Pahrump DMV office into something new. The building, on Basin Avenue, just west of the Nye County Courthouse, will soon be home to 2nd Amendment Guns and Shooting Range. Owner Kalif Gordon says he's excited to be coming to Pahrump.

Nye Commissioners Discuss Possible Lawsuit Against State

On May 3rd, Governor Steve Sisolak signed an emergency directive that updated mask and face covering requirements for the state to align with the CDC's recommendations. This resulted in the mask mandate being dropped for those that have been vaccinated. This, however, wasn't enough to remove the subject of a possible lawsuit against the state from the Board of County Commissioners agenda.

Nye Commissioners Approve Renaming Portion of Courthouse for Former Bailiff

When Gerald 'Bear' Smith passed away in January, it left a hole in the heart of his family, many people in the community and his work family at the Ian Deutch Government complex. To honor his many years of service and commitment as a bailiff, a resolution was presented at the May 18th Board of County Commissioners meeting to name the Courthouse within the Ian Deutch complex after him. Bear was also honored at the May 6th Fallen Peach Officers ceremony in Carson City. His name was added to a memorial monument along with Las Vegas Metro Lieutenant Erik Lloyd who also died of complications of COVID and Nevada Highway Patrol Sargent Ben Jenkins who was killed in the line of duty.

Sanders Family Winery in Pahrump is open again. The winery held a grand post-COVID grand opening event last weekend, with performances celebrating Armed Forces Day. Entertainment Director Kim Cornell Lyle says it's good to be back. You probably heard some music in the background. Well, that was The Swing It! Girls, performing a salute to the armed forces. A three-vehicle accident Saturday morning in Pahrump sends two people to the local hospital and causes significant damage to two classic cars. Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating. Troopers tell News 25 the chain reaction crash started when a vehicle stopped suddenly due to a mechanical failure. That vehicle was not struck during the collision.

Health: FDA Grants COVID-19 Vaccine EUA For Children 12-15

Another group of Americans is now eligible to receive Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine. The FDA recently granted emergency use authorization for children ages 12 to 15. State Fire Marshal Investigating Fire at Pahrump Denny's

Investigators are trying to pinpoint the cause of an early-morning fire that damaged the Denny's restaurant in Pahrump. A passerby noticed flames at the back of the building around two o'clock Tuesday morning. While firefighters were able to prevent the flames from spreading, there was significant water and smoke damage throughout the restaurant. The cleanup is already underway, and an employee told us they hope to reopen by the end of the week.

 

 

Bicyclist Collides with Nye County Sheriff's Office Patrol Vehicle

A bicyclist is being treated at a Las Vegas trauma center after his bike collided with a Nye County Sheriff's Office patrol vehicle. Captain David Boruchowitz says, right now, it appears the bicyclist failed to yield as he exited the jail parking lot.

Erica Foreman has more on what works -- according to science. It's best to forgo home remedies if you're in severe pain, having trouble breathing, or if you're not able to eat, drink or keep fluids down. Circle K Now Open in Pahrump

A new gas station, convenience store and automatic car wash is open in Pahrump. Circle K opened its doors today at the corner of Basin Avenue and Blagg Road. It was a busy place when we stopped by Friday morning... and General Manager Grace Blair says the new store has a lot to offer. Circle K is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

 

 

Firefighters to Help Burn Victim Clean Up Her Property

Pahrump Valley Fire and Rescue has teamed up with the Firefighters of Southern Nevada Burn Foundation to help a recovering burn victim clean up her property. They will be having an estate sale tomorrow with some of the treasures found on the property. News 25 spoke with volunteers on the project. The estate sale will take place tomorrow, May 8th between 10am and 2pm and is located at 4470 Whirlwind in Pahrump.

Today is Melanoma Monday -- a day set aside each year to help raise awareness about melanoma, which is considered the deadliest form of skin cancer. We spoke with a young woman about how she found out she had melanoma and why it's important to get checked if you notice anything unusual. When it comes to prevention, Doctor Gastman says it's important to regularly apply sun screen and avoid getting sun burned. UV protective clothing can also be helpful if you're going to be outside for a long period of time.
