Unless something changes, Desert Haven Animal Society will no longer operate the Pahrump animal shelter when their contract ends in June. County commissioners voted to allow the county to run the shelter. Local animal lovers are concerned that could lead to a kill shelter. So they continue to push the county to reconsider. At a recent rally in Pahrump, Desert Haven supporters gathered to show their opposition to a possible kill shelter. Meantime, supporters of County Commissioner Frank Carbone, who proposed the shelter changes, held their own rally just across the street. Desert Haven Executive Director Beth Kakavulias says the timing of Carbone's rally is suspect. But Carbone claims he didn't know anything about the Desert Haven rally.
