FEMA workshop: Flood Rate Insurance Maps (FIRMs)

The Nye County Planning Department would like to announce a local workshop hosted by Nye County, Nevada Division of Water Resources, and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Region IX, to provide information on the pending revised Flood Rate Insurance Maps (FIRMs), covering the southern area of Nye County.

The FEMA workshop will be held on January 29 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Letters have been sent out to property owners in the area.

The changes will also be discussed at the Pahrump Regional Planning Commission on Wednesday, January 15th. The meeting starts at 6 p.m.

Why this is important: If a property is mapped into a high-risk area and the owner has a mortgage through a federally regulated or insured lender, flood insurance will be required when the FIRM panels become effective. Property owners who obtain flood insurance before the FIRM panels become effective and then maintain it may be able to benefit from the NFIP’s “grandfathering” insurance rating process and pay a lower premium.
